Fishing in Vanuatu

Fishing Charter operators will take you to convenient fishing grounds which are close to your chosen accommodation on Espiritu Santo or on one of the neighbouring islands. Their objective is to get you actively fishing within half an hour.

What you will see along the way is not just a breathtaking vista of idyllic islands set on a shimmering tropical sea but also specific points of local interest. These include the legendary Million Dollar Point which is close to the final resting place of the famed wreck of the S.S. President Coolidge, a legacy left to Espiritu Santo from World War II when the island was a major American military base.

You will also be able to share the magic of our smaller islands like Aore,Tatuba, Bokissa, Malo and Malekula and on a clear day, wonder at the drama of the volcanic island of Ambae (also known as Bali Hai), made famous by James Mitchener in his Tales of the South Pacific.

Fishing Grounds

The grounds which yield the best catches are submerged seamounts which rise from depths as great as 600 metres up to about 24 metres beneath the surface. One of the most successful fishing sites is about 16 kilometres (8 nautical miles) south east from Luganville, the main town of Espiritu Santo. You can expect Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Dogtooth Tuna and large Yellowfin Tuna. On the western side of Luganville, the same variety of fish is caught around Araki Island and Pasco Bank in the Bouganville Strait as all these areas have serious tidal flow which lends itself to good fishing.

Tours cater for all, from the novice to the experienced game fishermen. They supply all fishing gear including light, medium and big game tackle, lures and Shimano & Penn International reels.

Game fishing

Affordable and memorable, fun fishing is a really relaxing activity for both young and old. For a maximum of 5 guests for half day (5 hrs) or a full day (8 hrs). Tour themes include tempting islands with secret sandy beaches, protected snorkelling sites, fishing, or a gourmet BBQ lunch on the beach.

Tour operators provide a BBQ lunch, ice-cold tropical drinks, masks and snorkels, towels and fishing gear. You generally provide: sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, masks and snorkels, and alcoholic beverages.
